MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 (2023): Refurbished, Specs & Repairs

The most affordable way into the modern MacBook Pro design
The MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 (2023) replaced the 13-inch MacBook Pro and brought the redesigned 14-inch body to a lower price. You get the Liquid Retina XDR display, HDMI, an SD card slot, MagSafe 3 charging and excellent speakers, powered by Apple’s standard M3 chip.
It is a superb all-round laptop for students, photographers and developers who want a better screen and more ports than a MacBook Air. Note that this base model has two Thunderbolt ports and supports one external display.
Every refurbished MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 (2023) we sell is checked by our technicians and comes with a 24-month warranty. Browse our refurbished MacBook Pro range, or book a repair if you already own one.
About This Model
The MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 (2023) is worth considering if you want a compact MacBook with a high-quality display for work, study and creative projects. It brings the standard M3 chip into the 14-inch Pro range, offering an alternative to both the MacBook Air and the more expensive M3 Pro and M3 Max configurations.

Which 14-inch MacBook Pro is this?
This guide covers the November 2023 model with the standard Apple M3 chip. “MacBook Pro” is the laptop’s name; it does not mean the machine has an M3 Pro processor.
The standard M3 version comes in Silver or Space Grey, has two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports and uses model identifier Mac15,3. The M3 Pro and M3 Max versions are separate models. Apple also sold 14-inch M2 Pro and M2 Max machines earlier in 2023.
When comparing adverts, ask for the chip, memory and storage capacity. Check About This Mac rather than relying on the year or a photograph alone.
Main specifications
- Chip: Apple M3 with an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU.
- Display: 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR, 3024 × 1964 resolution and ProMotion up to 120Hz.
- Memory: 8GB, 16GB or 24GB unified memory.
- Storage: 512GB, 1TB or 2TB SSD configurations.
- Connections: two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports, HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack.
- Camera: 1080p FaceTime HD.
- Weight: approximately 1.55kg.
Confirm the specification of the individual refurbished machine. Memory and storage options vary.
Should you choose 8GB, 16GB or 24GB?
Our advice is to consider memory carefully before buying. An 8GB machine can be suitable for lighter tasks such as documents, browsing and email, but it leaves less room for demanding applications and heavier multitasking.
We would generally start with 16GB when comparing machines for regular business use, coding or creative projects. That is buying guidance, not a guarantee that every workload will run comfortably. Large photo libraries, complex music sessions and video projects need to be judged against the applications and files you actually use.
A 24GB configuration may be worth considering if you want more capacity while staying with the standard M3. If your work regularly involves demanding graphics or substantial projects, compare the total price with an M3 Pro machine before deciding.
Memory is not a normal user upgrade after purchase. An external SSD can give you more space for files, but it cannot increase memory.
MacBook Pro M3 or MacBook Air?
The practical question is whether the Pro’s display and connections will improve your working day. If you edit photographs, work with video or regularly connect camera cards and a monitor, those features may justify the extra cost.
If most of your work is writing, administration and online study, a MacBook Air M2 may be a better fit for your budget. Consider the whole setup, including software, backup storage and any accessories you need.
For sustained creative workloads, compare configurations rather than assuming every laptop called “Pro” offers the same performance. Tell us what you use your Mac for and we can help you narrow down the options.
Using external monitors for business
The standard M3 MacBook Pro can use one external display alongside its built-in screen. With macOS Sonoma 14.6 or later, it can use two external displays when the laptop lid is closed, subject to supported resolutions and refresh rates.
Apple’s dual-display setup requires power and an external keyboard and mouse or trackpad. Opening the lid disconnects or turns off the second external display. Check your monitors and dock before buying, particularly if you want to keep the laptop screen active as part of a multi-screen workspace.
A MacBook for Bristol students and businesses
Bristol’s students need different things from a laptop. This model can be worth considering for a mix of coursework, presentations and creative projects, especially if you value the display and want a compact machine to carry between home and campus.
Before buying for university, check your department’s software requirements. Engineering, architecture and other courses may require Windows-only applications. Choose around those requirements and the projects you expect to complete later in the course.
For businesses, a suitably configured M3 MacBook Pro can serve staff working across documents, meetings, content creation and day-to-day client work. Discuss the memory, applications and monitor setup your team needs before ordering.
Buying the right configuration for each role can make more sense than giving every employee the same specification. Complete Mac Solutions supplies Macs for businesses as well as individual buyers.
Battery life and refurbished buying checks
Apple quoted up to 22 hours of movie playback and 15 hours of wireless web use under its test conditions. Those figures are not a promise for a refurbished Mac running your applications. Battery condition, settings and workload affect actual use.
Check the battery condition, charger, display, keyboard, trackpad and connections. Ask about cosmetic condition and any repair history. Confirm that the machine can be set up without a previous owner’s Activation Lock or an unexpected organisation management screen.
Allow enough internal storage for your applications and current projects. If you plan to use external drives, consider how you will carry, connect and back them up.
Faults and MacBook Pro M3 repairs in Bristol
Battery wear, accidental damage and software problems can affect a used MacBook. Individual repair reports do not establish a widespread defect in every M3 model.
Symptoms worth investigating include:
- Short battery life or unexpected shutdowns: assess battery condition and software activity.
- Charging problems: check the adapter, cable and charging connection before assuming a logic board fault.
- Display lines, flickering or damage: diagnosis helps identify the affected component.
- Unreliable connections: test the cable, dock and peripheral as well as the Mac.
- Keyboard or trackpad problems: investigate the symptom and any history of accidental damage.
- Slow performance or crashes: check memory pressure, available storage and software before deciding the machine needs replacing.
Complete Mac Solutions can assess your MacBook Pro and discuss repair options. The appropriate repair and cost depend on diagnosis, parts availability and the condition of the machine. See our Apple Mac repair service in Bristol for help.
