MacBook Air M1 (2020): Refurbished, Specs & Repairs

MacBook Air M1 2020 with its screen open

Fast, silent and excellent value

The MacBook Air M1 (2020) is the laptop we recommend to most people. Apple’s M1 chip made it dramatically faster than the Intel Air it replaced, and because it has no fan it is completely silent. Battery life comfortably lasts a full day of lectures, meetings or travel.

It handles study, office work, web browsing, photo editing and even light video work with ease, and it still receives the latest macOS updates. Choose 16GB of memory if you keep many apps open or want it to last for years.

Every refurbished MacBook Air M1 (2020) we sell is checked by our technicians and comes with a 24-month warranty. Browse our refurbished MacBook Air range, or book a repair if you already own one.

About This Model

The MacBook Air M1 (2020) combines a lightweight design, a sharp Retina screen and silent operation. It remains a model to consider for everyday work, study and portable use, whether you are buying a refurbished Mac or deciding what to do with one you already own.

Complete Mac Solutions supplies refurbished Macs and provides MacBook Air M1 repairs in Bristol. We can help you choose a suitable specification, investigate a fault or compare the cost of a repair with a replacement.

We carry a large stock of refurbished Macs and have an extensive supplier network. Many of the Macs we supply come fully boxed with all accessories and in fantastic condition. Ask us about the condition, packaging and accessories included with the particular machine you are considering.

Is the MacBook Air M1 right for you?

The M1 Air is a useful option for web browsing, email, office applications, coursework, video calls and lighter photo or video work. At approximately 1.29kg, it is easy to carry between home, work and college. Its fanless design also makes it completely quiet in normal use.

It is less suited to workloads that keep the processor working hard for long periods, such as repeated rendering or demanding video projects. A fan-cooled MacBook Pro may be a better fit for that type of work. Tell us which applications you use and we can help you compare suitable models.

When buying refurbished, the configuration and condition of the individual Mac matter as much as the model name. Battery health, storage capacity and memory should all be considered before you choose.

Identifying the 2020 M1 model

Apple sold both an Intel MacBook Air and an M1 MacBook Air in 2020. A description that says only “2020 MacBook Air” does not distinguish them. Check About This Mac for the Apple M1 chip; the M1 model identifier is MacBookAir10,1.

If your Mac will not start, send us its model details or serial number so we can help identify it before discussing a repair.

What the reviews found

WIRED’s original review highlighted the improvement in everyday performance and battery endurance over the earlier Intel Air. It also noted the limited connections and basic webcam. Laptop Mag praised the keyboard and colourful Retina screen, reinforcing the model’s appeal for writing and general use.

Notebookcheck’s testing found strong performance but a reduction during repeated heavy processor workloads. That helps explain the distinction between a laptop that feels quick in everyday tasks and one designed for sustained demanding work.

These reviews tested new machines at launch. They describe the design’s strengths and limitations, but cannot tell you the battery health, condition or repair history of a particular refurbished example.

Choosing memory and storage

The M1 Air was offered with 8GB or 16GB of unified memory. Its memory and internal storage are not ordinary user-upgradable components, so choose the specification you need before buying.

For lighter everyday tasks, an 8GB model may suit your needs. Consider 16GB if you regularly use several demanding applications or larger creative projects. We can help you judge the requirement from the software you actually use.

Think about how much storage your documents, photographs, music and video occupy. External storage can help, but adds another device to carry and connect. Compare the complete specification and condition rather than choosing solely on the additional GPU core.

MacBook Air M1 faults and repair options

If you already own this model, a fault does not necessarily mean you need another laptop. Complete Mac Solutions can assess your MacBook Air M1, identify the cause of the problem and explain the practical repair options. The symptoms below include reported model issues, general faults and normal wear; they do not all have the same cause.

Cracked screens, lines and blank displays

Some M1 Air owners have reported cracked screens, display lines or black areas, including accounts where they did not recall an impact. These reports do not establish that every M1 Air has a manufacturing defect or provide a reliable failure rate.

We can assess cracked, flickering or blank displays and discuss screen repair or replacement where appropriate. A black screen can also have a cause elsewhere in the Mac, so diagnosis matters before deciding which part needs attention.

Apple warns that closing a MacBook with a camera cover fitted can damage the display. Avoid trapping objects between the keyboard and screen. This warning does not explain every reported screen fault.

Charging problems and USB-C connections

If your M1 Air will not charge, loses its connection to an accessory or has an unreliable USB-C port, we can investigate. The charger, cable, connected device and the Mac itself all need to be considered before assuming a particular component has failed.

Apple’s Big Sur 11.2.2 update addressed a historical risk involving certain non-compliant powered USB-C hubs and docks. Keep the operating system updated and use suitable accessories. That software fix cannot reverse hardware damage that has already occurred.

Battery wear and unexpected shutdowns

A battery that runs down quickly, fails to charge reliably or causes unexpected shutdowns needs assessment. Battery wear depends on age and use, rather than being unique to the M1 Air.

We can check battery-related symptoms and discuss replacement where appropriate. Capacity, cycle count and actual behaviour should be considered together. Apple’s original battery-life figures were measured on new machines under test conditions; they are not a promise for a refurbished laptop.

Liquid damage and a Mac that will not start

We also assess liquid-damaged M1 Airs and machines that will not start. A power problem can have several causes, and liquid can affect more than one component. We will investigate the fault and explain the available options, including component-level repair where practical.

If files on the Mac are important, tell us before work begins. Because the internal storage is integrated into the machine, recovering data may depend on the nature and extent of the damage. We can discuss the prospects after assessment.

Heat, sustained performance and external displays

The M1 Air has no cooling fan. Performance can reduce during prolonged intensive work as it manages heat; this is a design limitation rather than automatically a fault. If it behaves unexpectedly during ordinary tasks, we can check for software or hardware causes.

It natively supports one external display alongside its built-in screen, up to 6K at 60Hz. Tell us if you need a multi-monitor setup so we can help you choose a suitable Mac.

Software compatibility

Check compatibility with your essential applications, plug-ins and accessories before buying or updating macOS. An operating system being supported on the Mac does not guarantee that every printer, audio interface or older application will work with it.

Tell us about the equipment and software you rely on. We can help you consider those requirements alongside memory, storage and performance.
