MacBook Air 13-inch Retina (2019): Refurbished, Specs & Repairs

A light Retina MacBook Air with True Tone
The MacBook Air 13-inch Retina (2019) is a refined version of the 2018 model, adding a True Tone display that adjusts to the light around you. It keeps Touch ID, the T2 security chip, two Thunderbolt 3 ports and a light, slim aluminium body.
It handles study, office work and web browsing comfortably. Like the 2018 model, it has the butterfly keyboard and a dual-core Intel processor, so it suits light use rather than demanding apps.
Every refurbished MacBook Air 13-inch Retina (2019) we sell is checked by our technicians and comes with a 12-month warranty. Browse our refurbished MacBook Air range, or book a repair if you already own one.
About This Model
The MacBook Air 13-inch Retina (2019) is a compact Intel laptop with a Retina screen, Touch ID and a lightweight aluminium design. As a used purchase, it is worth comparing when your needs are modest and the price, condition and software compatibility are right.
Complete Mac Solutions supplies used and refurbished Macs in Bristol and across the UK. We also repair the 2019 MacBook Air, helping owners investigate faults and decide whether repairing their existing laptop or choosing a replacement makes better sense.
This model needs careful buying checks, particularly around its keyboard, battery and storage capacity. A low price is only useful if the individual machine suits your work and is in the condition you expect.
Identify the 2019 MacBook Air correctly
This guide covers the MacBook Air Retina model introduced in 2019. It uses an Intel processor and is different from the older non-Retina Air, the 2020 Intel Air and the later Apple silicon models.
The 2019 update added True Tone to the Retina display. When comparing adverts, confirm the model information, memory and storage rather than identifying the laptop from its appearance alone.

- Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB SSD configurations.
- Graphics: integrated Intel UHD Graphics 617.

- Camera: 720p FaceTime HD.
- Security: Touch ID.
- Weight: approximately 1.25kg.
- Finishes: gold, silver and space grey.
What sort of work should you buy it for?
For documents, research, email and compatible everyday applications, this Air can be worth considering within a smaller budget. Check the requirements of the applications you need before deciding.
We would approach more demanding creative or technical workloads cautiously. Large photo projects, complex video editing and specialist development tools deserve a comparison with more capable machines.
Describe your normal working day rather than simply asking whether a laptop is “fast”. The number of applications you use together, the size of your files and your expectations all help determine a suitable specification.
If you already own this Air and it continues to do what you need, a repair assessment may be worthwhile. Its age alone does not decide whether you should replace it.
Memory and storage: avoid buying too little
The 8GB configuration may suit lighter requirements. If you work with several applications at once, discuss whether a 16GB machine would be a better fit. More memory does not solve every performance problem, but it belongs in the buying decision.
The entry-level 128GB SSD deserves particular attention. Applications, operating system files, photographs and documents can leave relatively little room for new work. Check how much storage you currently use before choosing this capacity.
A 256GB or 512GB configuration may be more practical, depending on your files. Larger storage is useful when you need to keep substantial libraries locally, but it should not replace a separate backup.
Do not plan on a conventional later memory or internal SSD upgrade. Choose a configuration that meets your needs when buying, and allow for suitable external storage where appropriate.
The butterfly keyboard: an important buying check
The 2019 Retina Air uses a butterfly keyboard rather than the scissor-switch Magic Keyboard introduced on the 2020 Intel Air. This is one of the most important differences between these generations.
Test every key carefully on a used example. Watch for letters appearing twice, presses that fail to register and keys that feel sticky or inconsistent. Type a paragraph, use the space bar repeatedly and test modifier keys as well as individual letters.
A keyboard that works during a brief demonstration may still have an intermittent issue. Ask whether the seller has noticed problems or whether the keyboard has previously been repaired or replaced.
If your own Air has developed these symptoms, contact us for an assessment. We can investigate the problem and explain suitable repair options. Do not assume that a historic manufacturer service programme still provides free cover for an individual machine.
Display, trackpad and connections
The Retina display is a useful feature for reading, writing and viewing photographs. Inspect it on different backgrounds, checking for cracks, marks, uneven illumination and damaged pixels.
Check that the lid opens smoothly and that the display remains stable as it moves. If an image disappears or changes with the lid position, describe that behaviour when requesting a repair assessment.
The two USB-C connections handle charging and compatible accessories. Think about how you will connect storage, a monitor and other equipment while charging. You may need a suitable hub or adapter, so include that in the overall budget.
Test the trackpad, camera, microphone and speakers too. A laptop is more than its processor and storage specification, particularly when it will be used for online meetings or study.
Battery condition and everyday portability
The compact design is appealing for carrying between home, work and university. However, the condition of the individual battery matters more than the endurance advertised when the model was new.
Ask about battery health, cycle count and actual running time. Cycle count provides useful context, but it does not describe every aspect of a battery’s condition.
Unexpected shutdowns, unusually short running time or a battery service message deserve investigation. If the case appears distorted or the battery seems swollen, stop using and charging the laptop and contact us for advice.
When comparing prices, allow for any battery work that may be needed. A cheaper machine requiring immediate repairs may be less attractive than a better-condition example with appropriate warranty cover.
Is it suitable for Bristol students?
Bristol students should begin with their course requirements. A laptop for essays, research and presentations is a different purchase from one intended for engineering software, demanding design work or film production.
Check the required applications and operating system with your course provider. An older Mac may run your existing software while being unsuitable for a newer version you will need during your studies.
We can help compare refurbished Macs within your budget and discuss current student offers. Include the cost of adapters, storage and other required equipment alongside the laptop.
If you expect to keep the machine throughout a course, compare software support, battery condition and the total purchase carefully. A newer model may be worth considering even when an older Air is initially cheaper.
Macs for business customers
Complete Mac Solutions also helps businesses choose suitable Macs. Explain your applications, remote access arrangements, connected equipment and security requirements before purchasing.
An older Intel Mac can be relevant to a particular established workflow, but compatibility needs checking. The processor type alone does not guarantee that every application, licence or peripheral will work as intended.
For businesses purchasing several machines, we can discuss available stock and sourcing options. The aim is to match the specification to the work rather than recommend the same laptop for every employee.
Buying a used 2019 Air: practical checks
Confirm the model, memory and SSD capacity. Ask about previous repairs, battery condition, included accessories and any intermittent faults.
Make sure the laptop is ready for a new owner, without another owner’s Activation Lock or unwanted organisation management. If an advert includes paid software, establish whether its licence can legitimately transfer to you.
Inspect the casing and hinge area, test both USB-C connections and spend enough time checking the keyboard. Confirm the keyboard layout if that matters to you.
Many of our Macs come fully boxed with all accessories and in fantastic condition. We confirm the individual machine’s condition, packaging and included items before purchase.
MacBook Air Retina 2019 repairs in Bristol
We can assess keyboard faults, battery problems, charging issues, damaged displays, trackpad concerns, liquid damage and Macs that will not start.
A symptom needs diagnosis before parts are recommended. Failure to charge can involve the charger, cable, connections or internal hardware; a blank screen does not automatically identify a failed display.
Warmth and fan noise also need context. Tell us whether the problem happens during demanding work, immediately after starting or while the laptop is doing very little. That information helps guide the assessment.
We explain what we find and discuss the proposed work so you can compare the repair cost with the laptop’s overall condition and usefulness.
Data concerns and postal repairs
If important files are on a Mac that will not start, mention that before authorising work. Repairing the laptop and recovering its data are separate outcomes, and neither should be assumed without assessment.
After liquid damage, stop using the machine and contact us. Repeated attempts to start it may complicate the situation, so explain what happened and whether recovering files is your priority.
We provide repairs in Bristol, with postal arrangements available for UK customers. Contact us before sending your laptop so we can discuss the fault and explain the next steps.
Refurbished stock, sourcing and warranty
Our available stock changes regularly. If you need a particular specification, our supplier network can often help us source a suitable Mac within days, subject to availability.
A refurbished Intel MacBook Air purchased from Complete Mac Solutions comes with a 12-month sales warranty covering qualifying faults that develop under normal use.
Our repair work carries a separate 12-month repair warranty. Each warranty applies to its respective service.
The sales warranty has exclusions, including accidental damage, liquid damage, misuse and normal battery capacity decline. Covered sales claims include postage both ways within the UK. Full terms are available in our warranty policy, and your statutory rights remain unaffected.
Our buying advice
Consider the MacBook Air Retina 2019 when its price, condition and software compatibility fit your needs. Pay particular attention to the keyboard, battery and storage capacity, and compare it with available newer alternatives.
If you already own one, we can assess a fault and help you decide whether repair is worthwhile. If you are buying, we can help find a suitable refurbished Mac for home, study or business.
