The Mac mini M2 / M2 Pro (2023) kept the familiar silver Mac mini case and added a choice of Apple’s M2 chip or the much more powerful M2 Pro. It added Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and HDMI with 8K support on the M2 Pro model, which also has four Thunderbolt 4 ports.
The M2 model is an excellent everyday desktop, and the M2 Pro model suits video editing, music production and development at a fraction of the cost of a Mac Studio. Both still run current macOS.

About This Model
The Mac mini M2 / M2 Pro (2023) was announced on 17 January 2023 and went on sale on 24 January 2023, with UK prices starting at £649 for the M2 model and £1,399 for the M2 Pro model. It replaced the M1 Mac mini and was replaced by the much smaller M4 Mac mini in November 2024.

Which Mac mini does this cover?
This guide covers the Mac mini (2023) with the M2 or M2 Pro chip. Choose About This Mac from the Apple menu: the chip will be shown as Apple M2 or Apple M2 Pro.
It looks almost identical to the M1 Mac mini from 2020, so check the chip name rather than relying on the case. On the back, the M2 Pro model has four Thunderbolt ports and the M2 model has two.

M2 or M2 Pro?
The M2 model suits office work, study, browsing, photo editing, home music production and coding. It is quick, quiet and uses very little power.
The M2 Pro model doubles the memory bandwidth, adds more CPU and GPU cores and supports a third display. It suits video editing, larger music projects and development work. If you are not sure which you need, tell us what software you use and we will advise.

macOS compatibility
As an Apple silicon Mac, this model runs the current version of macOS and should continue to receive macOS updates for years, unlike Intel Macs.
Some older Intel-only applications and plug-ins may not run, and Apple silicon Macs cannot run Windows through Boot Camp. Check that the software you depend on supports Apple silicon before you buy.
Memory and storage choices
The unified memory is part of the chip. 8GB on the M2 suits light use; choose 16GB or more for heavier multitasking, and 32GB on the M2 Pro for large video or audio projects.
Neither the memory nor the internal storage can be upgraded later. Fast external drives are a practical way to add space for files and archives. Ask us about storage options before deciding.

Check whether the machine is covered by AppleCare before arranging any repair, as independent work may affect what Apple will do.
Startup and power problems
